This was a very cool look at Le Tour from the past. Interesting to hear a reporter saying ‘Doping or not doping. That is the question’ (@8:30). Some things never change.
Actually, you still can’t be fruit as an energy food. Bananas, for instance, are much more effective than gels for quick energy. (Dates are also good.) The only advantages for a gel is that it’s small, you can carry as much as you need, it comes in many flavors, and you don’t have to peel it. Ounce for ounce, though, you’re much better off with a banana.
Well, you are not quite right… At that time, there was no doping control, and even Anquetil said later that he was in excessive use of drugs. Today there is more dope control
Who in the right mind would drink coffee or alcohol and still think of winning the race? And eating fruit when now we have pieces of super goo to give more energy in five seconds.
True. Every generation seems to yearn for the days of “yore.” All forms of sport become increasing technical through the years…especially when people begin to realize how drinking a bottle of freaking wine during an endurance race won’t do much to help put you in the lead. Save the liquor for the celebrations and Sunday rides with friends 🙂
doping was as much a reality back then than now… Less spoke about maybe…
anyone who ever completes the tour de france is an incredible athlete wether it was 50 years ago or yesterday. one of the harder sport there is.
I watched it on mute and read the subtitles in Phil Liggett’s voice.

“Getting soaked is dangerous and you can catch a cold.” Lol

The riders looked like men in those days, but nowadays cyclists look like boys

I liked seeing the old Rolleiflex camera carried by one motorcyclist.
Awesome, thank you for uploading. Does anyone have any info on any other Louis Malle documentaries in full on youtube?
Thanks

Wow, Mafac brakes (a few seconds before the very end)! I remember those from Peugeots in the 1970s!

Very interesting clip, even though I’m not a fan of cycling. Good quality. Good stuff! 🙂
